Children's Ministry

Children in Worship
Your children are always welcome in worship. Our joyful music and interactive worship stations, inclusive language and learning styles make worship a vibrant and joyful experience for all ages. Activity bags are available in the back of the sanctuary for those who like to color. A children's time helps your child connect to worship in a fun and developmentally appropriate way. We hope you will also bring your children for our special services like Ash Wednesday and the Animal Blessing.
After the Children's Moment, children (age 3 to third grade) are invited to experience our hands on, worship centered Godly Play Room. This Montessori based technique uses handmade manipulatives to tell Bible stories . This experience incorporates prayer disciplines, yoga, tai chi, service and teachings about the church year, Communion, and Baptism. Each child keeps a journal of pictures and writings for their use. Free art and choices for learning stations help the children to process their experience. A science station, building blocks, a drama box, a puppet theater a mini church play area and a library are all stations the children may choose.
While this program teaches Bible stories like the DIG program at 9 a.m., the emphasis during this program will be on broadly graded, lectionary based, worship education and spiritual practices.
On the first Sunday of each month, the children will be brought back into the service to have Communion with their families.
Childcare is provided for children age 0-2 years.
Our Nursery
Our nursery is available for your convenience on Sundays from 8:45-11:15 a.m. in our beautiful, sunny, and newly remodeled space shared with Steele Street Preschool. Our expert nursery director, Leslie Kahler will greet you at the door with her welcoming smile and put your child at ease in no time. The nursery is conveniently located on the main floor near the sanctuary.
Sunday School
Come dig for treasures with us! DIG is an age specific, progressive Christian classes for preschool to age 18, nurturing the theological explorer in your children and youth. We will dig deep into our holy stories to try to uncover the relevance within. There will be three classes to begin and we will further divide as we grow. (preschool-2nd, 3rd-5th, and 6th-youth). Childcare will also be provided for both hours.

Children and Mission
We encourage children to stretch those compassion muscles through activities like buying Christmas gifts for the children at The Gathering Place, bagging beans and rice for Metro Caringmaking dog biscuits for the Maxfund puppies, decorating plates for the men in New Genesis Shelter, filling backpacks with school supplies or hygiene products for Sungate Kids or The Gathering Place, and so much more. One of our favorite activities involves making bags to hand out to homeless people at corners. Many of our families carry these bags in their cars regularly. There are so many ways for your children to connect with mission at the Kirk.
