Children in Worship
Your children are always welcome in worship. There are pillows on the floor by the front row of chairs for any who would like to sit on the floor. Activity bags are available in the back of the sanctuary. A children's time helps your child connect to worship in a fun and developmentally appropriate way. Rhythm instruments are available in the front row for any who would like to add some percussion to the opening music. We hope you will also bring your children for our services like Ash Wednesday and the Blessing of the Animals.
After the Children's Moment, children (age 3 to second grade) are invited to experience our hand on, worship centered Godly Play Room. This Montessori based technique uses handmade manipulatives to tell Bible stories . This experience incorporates prayer disciplines, service and teachings about the church year, Communion, and Baptism. Free art and use of manipulatives helps the children to process their experience.
While this program teaches Bible stories like the DIG program at 9 a.m., the emphasis during this program will be on broadly graded, lectionary based, worship education and spiritual practices.
On the first Sunday of each month, the children will be brought back into the service to have Communion with their families.
Childcare is provided for children age 0-2 years.
Our nursery is available for your convenience on Sundays from 8:45-11:15 a.m. in our beautiful, sunny, and newly remodeled space shared with Steele Street Preschool. Our expert nursery director, Leslie Kahler will meet you at the door with her welcoming smile and put your child at ease in no time. The nursery is conveniently located on the main floor near the sanctuary.
Come dig for treasures with us! DIG is an age specific, progressive Christian classes for preschool to age 18, nurturing the theological explorer in your children and youth. We will dig deep into our holy stories to try to uncover the relevance within. There will be three classes to begin and we will further divide as we grow. (preschool-1st, 2nd-4th, and 5th-youth). Childcare will also be provided for both hours.
Children and Mission
We encourage children to stretch those compassion muscles through activities like buying Christmas gifts for the children at The Gathering Place, bagging beans and rice for Metro Caring, making dog biscuits for the Maxfund puppies, decorating plates for the men in New Genesis Shelter, filling backpacks with school supplies or hygiene products for Sungate or The Gathering Place, and so much more. There are so many ways for your children to connect with mission at the Kirk.
